This is a very difficult prophecy. It is a detail about the leaders of the empires. It can be divided into several parts.

  1. Medo-Persia and Greece. A repetition of these nations with details about the leaders.
  2. Pagan Rome. These are details about the Roman empire.
  3. Papal Rome. These are details about the work of the church.
  4. The End of The Papacy. There are two possible interpretations because the papacy will fall twice. The similarity in both falls is an example of how God uses similar strategies to take action. Also, it is only in the enlargement prophecy of Revelation 13 that we learned that the Papacy was conquered twice. The less detailed prophecy in Daniel 11 merged the events of both falls and we are actually told to prophesy twice.
  5. The Resurrection. This prophecy also describes the two resurrections as one event, just as the two falls of the Papacy are described as one event.

Daniel chapter 11 is an outline that Gabriel gives to Daniel about the detailed history from the time of Darius the Mede, through the time of Christ's crucifixion in Daniel 11: 22. It continues on through the time of the end. The chapter centers on the activities of the king of the north and the king of the south.
After Alexander the Great died, the Greek empire was divided among his four generals. This appeared in prophecy as the four heads of the leopard and the four horns of the goat. In this prophecy we see the Greek empire with two divisions. History records that the four divisions later consolidated into two powerful northern and southern divisions.
As usual, the prophecy sets the stage and starts out by identifying the preceding powers, Medo-Persia and Greece, then it proceeds to the divisions of the Greek empire and detailed events until the general resurrection.

Cosmic Forces
Third Year of Cyrus
The Septuagint Greek has the first year instead of the third year. During the first two years Cyrus was co-regent with Darius over the Medo-Persian Empire. The third year of Cyrus was the first year of his independent reign over the Persian empire. In that year, Cyrus issued the first of the three decrees leading up to the restoration of the temple and Jerusalem.

Darius and Cyrus Cyrus
The Seventy Year Captivity Is Over
In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom and also put it in writing: "Thus says Cyrus king of Persia: The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he has charged me to build him a house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah.
Whoever is among you of all his people, may his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and rebuild the house of the Lord, the God of Israel -- he is the God who is in Jerusalem.
(Ezra 1: 1-3) (RSV)

Chapter 10 introduces us to the events before the long vision in Daniel 11 - 12. Daniel was fasting and praying because the end of the seventy year captivity was near. He expected Israel to be delivered. God answered His prayer but Satan was attempting to stop the process by delaying the angel who was sent to Daniel. We learn that we are a part of a great cosmic conflict involving living creatures that are not on this earth.

In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a word was revealed to Daniel, who was named Belteshazzar. And the word was true, and it was a great conflict. And he understood the word and had understanding of the vision.
In those days, I, Daniel, had been mourning for three entire weeks. I did not eat any tasty food, nor did meat or wine enter my mouth, nor did I use any ointment at all until the entire three weeks were completed.
After Passover. On the twenty fourth day of the first month, while I was by the bank of the great river, that is, the Tigris ...
(Daniel 10: 1-4)
According to Daniel 1: 21, "Daniel continued even to the first year of king Cyrus." When we compare this to Ezra we see that it was approaching the end of the 70 years captivity.
Daniel was an old man of approximately 88. This vision occurred approximately three years after the vision of Daniel 9 which was in "the first year of Darius" (Daniel 9: 1) during his co-regency with Cyrus.

» Passover. Passover had just ended and Daniel had probably expected a Passover deliverance from Babylon like the exodus from Egypt. The fact that he had been praying for three weeks showed that he had been praying from the beginning of the month and for the entire Passover season.

» Christ. Daniel sees a vision of Christ that was similar to the one in Revelation 1: 12-18.
I lifted my eyes and looked, and then, there was a certain man dressed in linen, whose waist was girded with a belt of pure gold of Uphaz. His body also was like beryl, his face had the appearance of lightning, his eyes were like flaming torches, his arms and feet like the gleam of polished bronze, and the sound of his words like the sound of a tumult. Now I, Daniel, alone saw the vision, while the men who were with me did not see the vision; nevertheless, a great dread fell on them, and they ran away to hide themselves. So I was left alone and saw this great vision; yet no strength was left in me, for my natural color turned to a deathly pallor, and I retained no strength. But I heard the sound of his words; and as soon as I heard the sound of his words, I fell into a deep sleep on my face, with my face to the ground. (Daniel 10: 5-9)

The Great Controversy
We see the Great Controversy revealed in Daniel 10: 13. It portrays the unseen spiritual battle in the history of God's people. In this spiritual battle, Satan tried to prevent Cyrus from issuing the important decree to release the Hebrews and allow the rebuilding of the temple. At last, Christ comes to the rescue. He prevails over Satan resulting in the decree of Ezra 1: 1 to allow God's people to return home.

Spiritual War 1
"But the prince of the kingdom of Persia was withstanding me for twenty one days; then, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left there with the kings of Persia. "Now I have come to give you an understanding of what will happen to your people in the latter days, for the vision pertains to the days yet future.'' When he had spoken to me according to these words, I turned my face toward the ground and became speechless. (Daniel 10: 13-15)

In verse 12, we see that the angel (Gabriel) was resisted by the prince of the kingdom of Persia until Michael came to help him overcome the opposing prince. Who is this "prince of the kingdom of Persia" that resisted Gabriel and had to be overcome by Christ? He was not King Cyrus whose historical titles included Great King, King of Babylon, and King of Lands. This person was the spiritual "prince" of Persia. Jesus, three different times, identified Satan as the "prince" or "ruler" of this present world:

Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. (John 16: 11)
Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. (John 12: 31)
After this I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world comes, and has nothing in me. (John 14: 30)
Paul also tells us who our real spiritual enemies are:
For we struggle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. (Ephesians 6: 12)
Gabriel is now coming to make Daniel "understand" what will happen in the future. The vision presented in chapter 11 and part of chapter 12 gives an enlargement of what will happen during the "vision" of the 2300 years.
Who is Michael? The lesson shows that Michael is Christ who was active in the Old Testament.

Waiting For ChristChrist The Antichrist
This prophecy identified both the Christ who fulfills the covenant and the Antichrist who acts against the covenant. The interpretation is based on dividing the prophecy into four sections.

  1. The Succession of Powers Up To Christ (1-22). This tracks the nations and leaders up to Christ for the first seventy weeks of the prophecy of Daniel 9. The goal is to identify the people who would rule when the Messiah comes until Israel's probation ends. This positively identifies a time to look for the Messiah.
  2. The Rise And Fall Of Pagan Rome (23-30). Now that Rome as been identified as the kingdom that is in power when Christ comes, the prophecy goes back to give a history of this empire from the time they make an alliance with the people of the covenant until the time they act to destroy the covenant.
  3. The Rise Of Papal Rome (Antichrist) (31-39). Rome is identified as the power that sets up all the systems that will destroy the covenant. After destroying the Prince of the Covenant and desolating the sanctuary and the people, it sets up or places the final Antichrist into power.
  4. The Fall Of The Antichrist At The Time Of The End (40-45). This section of the prophecy is repeated twice. The final fall is parallel to the time of Revelation 13. The Antichrist makes its final attack on the people of the covenant and corrupts the people and the sanctuary. Simultaneously the message of the covenant and the sanctuary is restored to the people.

In Daniel 8-9, the prophecy is about the Prince of the covenant who keeps the covenant and restores the sanctuary. Here, the prophecy is about the powers who destroy the Prince, the covenant and the sanctuary and corrupt the people and set up their own covenant and sanctuary.
This prophecy is specifically about the fate of the Jews until the end of time.

Israel A Prophecy For The Jewish People. Now I have come to give you an understanding of what will happen to your people in the latter days, for the vision pertains to days yet future. (Daniel 10: 14)

The Succession of Powers Up To Christ (The Seventy Weeks)
The seventy weeks of Daniel begins after the fall of ancient Babylon. This is where this prophecy begins.

Medo-Persia, Greece And The Battles Of The King Of The North And South
The prophecy chronicles, in great detail, the exploits of the leaders and personalities of the Medo-Persian and Greek empires.

The King of the North. As we approach this phase of history, the Seleucid empire (king of the north) was ruling the world and became a threat to the growing Roman power. Between 223-221 BC, the Graeco- Macedonian empire was geographically essentially the same as the original Grecian Empire under Alexander the Great. The Romans would attack and assume the mantle of the new King of the North.
Israel Jewish Fulfillment. Under Greek rule, the Jews were caught between the battles of the two Greek generals, the Ptolemies in the south and the Seleucids in the north.

The Leaders Of Pagan Rome Before The Messiah
The Roman Conquests. "But he who comes against him will do as he pleases, and no one will be able to withstand him; he will also stay for a time in the Beautiful Land, with destruction in his hand.
Julius and Cleopatra. "He will set his face to come with the power of his whole kingdom, bringing with him a proposal of peace which he will put into effect; he will also give him the daughter of women to ruin it. But she will not take a stand for him or be on his side. "Then he will turn his face to the coast lands and capture many. But a commander will put a stop to his scorn against him; moreover, he will repay him for his scorn.
Assassinated. "So he will turn his face toward the fortresses of his own land, but he will stumble and fall and be found no more.
Augustus Caesar (The Tax Man). "Then in his place one will arise who will send an oppressor [raiser of taxes] through the Jewel of his kingdom; yet within a few days he will be shattered, though not in anger nor in battle.
Tiberius Caesar (The Vile Person). "In his place a despicable person will arise, on whom the honor of kingship has not been conferred, but he will come in a time of tranquility and seize the kingdom by intrigue.
Crucifixion. "The overflowing forces will be flooded away before him and shattered, and also the prince of the covenant.
(Daniel 11: 16-22)
Now the prophecy chronicles, in great detail, the exploits of the leaders and personalities of the Roman empire up to those who would rule over the Messiah.

The Rise And Fall Of The Pagan Roman Empire
So far, we have seen the outline of history to the Messiah. It lists all the leaders until the Messiah, Who would be killed by the Roman empire. That is the end of the seventy weeks of Daniel 9.
Now, the prophecy traces the relationship of the Roman empire from the time of their official alliance with the Jews.
Alliance. "After an alliance is made with him he will practice deception, and he will go up and gain power with a small force of people. " In a time of tranquility he will enter the richest parts of the realm, and he will accomplish what his fathers never did, nor his ancestors; he will distribute plunder, booty and possessions among them, and he will devise his schemes against strongholds, but only for a time.
Battle of Actium. "He will stir up his strength and courage against the king of the South with a large army; so the king of the South will mobilize an extremely large and mighty army for war; but he will not stand, for schemes will be devised against him. "Those who eat his choice food will destroy him, and his army will overflow, but many will fall down slain. "As for both kings, their hearts will be intent on evil, and they will speak lies to each other at the same table; but it will not succeed, for the end is still to come at the appointed time.
Two Expeditions. "Then he will return to his land with much plunder; but his heart will be set against the holy covenant, and he will take action and then return to his own land. "At the appointed time he will return and come into the South, but this last time it will not turn out the way it did before.
Barbarian Invasion. "For ships of Kittim will come against him; therefore he will be disheartened and will return and become enraged at the holy covenant and take action; so he will come back and show regard for those who forsake the holy covenant.
(Daniel 11: 23-30)

Wheel The Rise Of The Antichrist
Desolation. Forces from him will arise, desecrate the sanctuary fortress, and do away with the regular sacrifice. And they will set up the abomination of desolation.
Corruption. "By smooth words he will turn to godlessness those who act wickedly toward the covenant, but the people who know their God will display strength and take action.
Persecution. "Those who have insight among the people will give understanding to the many; yet they will fall by sword and by flame, by captivity and by plunder [spoil] for many days.
Help Comes. "Now when they fall they will be granted a little help, and many will join with them in hypocrisy. "Some of those who have insight will fall, in order to refine, purge and make them pure until the end time; because it is still to come at the appointed time.
(Daniel 11: 31-35)
The prophecy now mimics the words used to describe the little horn. Now we can see that those prophecies were only concerned with the legacy of destruction against the people and sanctuary and covenant of God.

Israel The Time Of The End For The Jews
Until the time of Jesus Christ, this prophecy has been exclusively about the fate of the Jewish people. However, after Christ, the definition of Israel as the children of God, now included the Gentile Christians. So this prophecy covers the status of physical and spiritual Israel as they encounter the Antichrist.
This complicated prophecy covers the fall of the Antichrist as it controls a split church across a split Roman empire. As both branches of Israel unite, the Antichrist makes one final effort to exterminate them.

We are proposing that the fall of Pagan Rome and the persecution of the Jews will be signs for us at the end of time.

Israel Rome Conquers Israel: The Antichrist Fights The Jews
Anticipating the birth of the Messiah, the forces of evil began a cult of making gods out of living humans so that men became gods at the same time that God became a Man. The Antichrist attacks the first branch of the church. It goes after the Jews in the eastern Roman empire.
If we see the "end time" as the end of the 490 days of prophecy when the Messiah would come, then the end would come with the end of the First Coming of the Messiah. The events at the first coming are a pattern of the Second Coming. The world was in turmoil on the eve of the First Coming of the Messiah. The rest of the prophecy can be seen as a destruction of the Jews by the Romans.

Wheel The Time of the End (Verse 40-45). Rome is doomed because they attempted to destroy the united spiritual nation of Israel. Since the "time of the end" between the fall of the Jews and their rise at "the end of time" is so long, over 1800 years, the events are the perfect candidate for the "wheel within a wheel" similarity of prophecy. The events leading up to the fall of Jerusalem between 70 and 132 AD will repeat themselves at the end. A combination of events since 1798 have shuffled powers and forces to be in position at the end of time.

The forces that fulfilled the prophecy for the Christian branch of the church led to the events that propelled the Jews back to the land of Israel where they must be for Rome to repeat what Hadrian had done.

The Rise Of Papal Rome
The Antichrist fights the second branch of the church. It goes after the Christians in the western Roman empire.

Wheel The Fall Of The Antichrist At The Time Of The End
This is the end of religious tyranny as God removes the Antichrist. The period from 1798 until the Second Coming is prophetically "the time of the end". We are proposing that this fall of the Antichrist takes place in two phases at the global end of time. Both phases will follow a similar pattern of events and the prophecies from verse forty to the end of Daniel 12 can be applied to both.

  1. Wounded in 1798 (First Fall). In the first phase the Antichrist is wounded at the end of the French Revolution. Then this deadly wound will be healed, as stated in the prophecy of Revelation 13.
  2. Destroyed at the Second Coming (Second Fall). In the second phase the Antichrist healed, then it is desolated by the plagues and the end of the world.

Layers The Fall Of The Papacy: Part 1 (The Deadly Wound)
In the next lesson we will present the details about the second fall of the papacy after its wound is healed. But now we present the events of the first fall of the papacy when they received a deadly wound.

The American-French Revolution
The French Revolution was actually inspired by the success of the American Revolution against Britain. The economic support of the Americans, landed the French into economic debt which helped to trigger the crises that caused their revolution.
The French revolution was exported to Rome where the city fell to General Berthier in February 1798. In France, they outlawed Christianity and established atheism as the state religion. It was France who helped to established the papacy in the fifth century and it would be France who would bring them down the first time. When the Roman caesars abdicated the throne in Rome and left the church in charge of the western empire with a small army, it was France who used their military power to keep the Papacy in power.
"Then the king will do as he pleases, and he will exalt and magnify himself above every god and will speak monstrous things against the God of gods; and he will prosper until the indignation is finished, for that which is decreed will be done. "He will show no regard for the gods of his fathers or for the desire of women, nor will he show regard for any other god; for he will magnify himself above them all. "But instead he will honor a god of fortresses, a god whom his fathers did not know; he will honor him with gold, silver, costly stones and treasures. "He will take action against the strongest of fortresses with the help of a foreign god; he will give great honor to those who acknowledge him and will cause them to rule over the many, and will parcel out land for a price [divide the land for gain]. (Daniel 11: 36-39)

War With Egypt And Turkey (The Ottoman Caliphate)
"At the end time the king of the South will collide with him, and the king of the North will storm against him with chariots, with horsemen and with many ships; and he will enter countries, overflow them and pass through. "He will also enter the Beautiful Land, and many countries will fall; but these will be rescued out of his hand: Edom, Moab and the foremost of the sons of Ammon. "Then he will stretch out his hand against other countries, and the land of Egypt will not escape. "But he will gain control over the hidden treasures of gold and silver and over all the precious things of Egypt; and Libyans and Ethiopians will follow at his heels. "But rumors from the East and from the North will disturb him, and he will go out with great wrath to destroy and annihilate many. "He will pitch the tents of his royal pavilion between the seas and the beautiful Holy Mountain; yet he will come to his end, and no one will help him. (Daniel 11: 40-45)
By this time the church was split into two branches, the Jews and Christians. In the east, the Muslims ruled the land of Palestine. In the west, the Pope ruled over the Christians. After many crusades, the church had to abandon the eastern (Byzantine) empire to the Muslims. So, following our rules if inheritance both were the "king of the north", ruling over the two branches of the church. Since the Christian branch were the official people of the covenant, the papacy remained the true king of the north. Now the prophecy chronicles the defeat of both of these powers.

Israel The Five Curses Fall On Israel.

1 Time Punished 7 Times Punished 7 Times Punished 7 Times with Hostility Punished 7 Times with Wrath

Covenant Exile 400
Gathering 1948
Divided Exile Land Taken Children Taken Vengeance for the Covenant Martyrs Wrath of God
Assyria Babylon Persia to Messiah Romans Islam
North Diaspora (2520 Years of Occupation and Exile)
This interesting analysis of the covenant and its curses shows that while the fourth application of the curse may have been related to Christ, the entire 2520 year can be seen as an overall pattern that is related to the original punishment for idolatry under the judges. So that their repatriation into the land is because the punishment had ended.

  1. Division of the Nation (One Time). In 722 BC, the Assyrians captured the ten northern tribes.
  2. Land Taken (Seven Times). The remaining southern tribes would be scattered, occupied and in exile for almost 2520 years after the Babylonian captivity. Intrestingly, the ten northern tribes would be also under captivity for 2520 years (721-1798).
  3. Children Taken Away (Seven Times). This period ended with the death of Christ, the Son that they waited for, but rejected. He was given to the Gentiles to raise. The Jews would also be scattered among the nations in this time, coming from about fourteen places for the Passover in the year Christ died.
  4. War and Vengeance for the Covenant (Seven Times With Hostility).
During this period they had three wars with the Romans and vengeance was brought upon them and Rome because of the destruction of the Prince of the Covenant. The Jews were scattered further in Europe and the new world because of relentless persecution.
Lamb In the Christian branch of the church, the sword of vengeance for the covenant would fall in 1798. After over 1260 years of apostasy, the Christian branch would go through five cycles of the curses themselves.
Amazingly, 2520 years of exile for the ten northern tribes ended in 1798 also!
  5. Sanctuary Destroyed and Exile (Seven Times With Wrath). The Nazi Holocaust lasted seven years (1938-45). 6 million Jews were killed. This final wrath ended with the regathering of the people. Was this a punishment from God?
No. As the evidence showed, they already suffered the fifth curse two times when the temple was destroyed. Their fate must be resolved because there can never be a third destruction of the temple. So, from the time Hadrian exiled them, the longest they could be taken from the land according to the covenant was about 500 years. So why were they kept from the land for almost 1500 years more? Why was the temple not rebuilt? In this period, the temple is being rebuilt and its holy objects restored and the people gathered for Succos. Then God will take revenge on their enemies.

Persecution And The Second Coming.
Persecution. And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince who stands for the children of your people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time your people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.
Resurrection. And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.
(Daniel 12: 1-3)

The Ottoman rule ends with world war 1. The "time of trouble such as never was" introduced two world wars and the atomic bomb that is capable of annihilating the planet. This is the legacy of the first fall which ended the rule of the military and religious king of the north. It established atheism in the French Revolution which spread to Russia in the 1917 communist takeover. Old colonial empires such as Britain and France lost their power because of world war 2.

God wanted the Messiah to be recognized. So this prophecy gives details about the political players just before and immediately after the Messiah in great detail. This is the first time that we have seen such detail.
Then the prophecy proceeds to describe the little horn as the king of the north. It gives more details about its activities. It is here that the apostle John picks up the prophecies in Revelation. As you will see, Revelation concentrates on the activities of this power and the actions of God to stop it.

One notable aspect of the prophecy is the merging of the events at the time of the end in Daniel 11: 40-45 and Daniel 12: 1-3. We can more easily accept the fact that Daniel 12 does merge the prophecy of the resurrection, so it is not unreasonable to assume that the prophecy might also merge the events before it. That is the fall of the papacy.
