The gift of tongues is studied as a separate issue because of current events:

History. The gift was popular in the early church because they were so few at the beginning and their mission was to go to the world. It was an important gift to build the early church.
The Commission. And he said to them, Go into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believes and is baptized shall be saved; but he that does not believe shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues. (Mark 16: 15-17)

Importance And Use Of The Gift Of Tongues

While this gift is a sign of supernatural activity, it is not a sign of salvation. Love is the sign of salvation.
O righteous Father, although the world has not known You, yet I have known You, and these have known that You sent Me. And I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that the love with which You have loved Me may be in them, and I in them. (John 17: 25-26)
